Phyllis Arleen Walker, cherished daughter of the late Noble E. and Erma H. (Johnson) Rogers, was born May 3, 1930, in Texas County, Missouri, and departed this earthly home on March 6, 2026, at her Mountain Grove, home. Leaving behind a legacy of love and memories. She lived 95 years, 10 months and 3 days. Phyllis spent her formative years on the family farm on Little Creek Road in Texas County, where she attended Little Creek school until eighth grade. She graduated from Mountain Grove High School in 1947, marking the beginning of a life well-lived. Following high school, she briefly pursued higher education, studying business and worked at Ben Franklin, embarking on a journey of purpose. She married Ralph Woods on Jan. 6, 1954, and though their union was brief, their love endured until his passing just a year later. Phyllis then worked at M and G Motor Supply as a bookkeeper in Mountain Grove, where she met her future husband, Jesse Walker, and they were joyfully united in marriage on Feb. 17, 1957, in Texas County, Missouri. Together, they raised two sons and called Mountain Grove their home for many years, dairy farming for 20 years just north of town before settling in town for 32 years. During this time, Phyllis radiated love, care and nurturing as a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, friend, and neighbor, touching countless lives and leaving an eternal impact. Phyllis was saved at the age of 30 and was a devoted member of the First Freewill Baptist Church of Mountain Grove serving as a Sunday school teacher for many years. Phyllis found joy in family time, traveling in the RV, and attending family reunions spreading warmth. Her banana bread was legendary and her love for horses cultivated in youth, remained a treasured memory. Phyllis exemplified a life of service, always prioritizing others.
Besides her parents, she was preceeded in death by her husband, Jesse Walker; son, Steven Walker; sister, Lois Reed; and brother, Charles Rogers. She leaves behind a legacy of loved ones, including her son, Jimmy Walker, of Mountain Grove; grandchildren, Erin Richardson and her husband, Adam, and Sara Openshaw, and her husband, Nick; nine great-grandchildren, Gracie Richardson, Hallie Richardson, MacKenzie Richardson, Camden Openshaw, Luke Richardson, Corbin Openshaw, Cadence Openshaw, Cody Richardson and Collyns Openshaw, all of Mountain Grove; a multitude of nieces and nephews; and a vast network of relatives and friends who cherish her memory and will deeply miss her. Visitation for Phyllis Walker will be held Thursday, March 12, 2026, from 10-11 a.m. at Craig-Hurtt Funeral Home, Mountain Grove. Funeral services will follow at 1 p.m., also at the funeral home, with the Rev. Jim Hurtt officiating. David Prock, John Bradshaw, Nick Openshaw, Adam Richardson, Caleb Edwards and Danny Lathrom will serve as pallbearers.
