Hartville Eagles’ baseball wins Southern Invitational championship
The Hartville Eagles’ baseball team won the Southern Invitational championship in Dora after a pair of wins in classics against Bakersfield and Van Buren.
The Bulldogs hit a solo home run in their final at-bat, but their rally fell short as the Eagles held off Van Buren, 11-10, to clinch the title.
Gus Sinning hit a three-run home run in the second and Cole Sinning hit a grand slam an inning later to put Hartville up 11-1. Van Buren would score nine unanswered runs and the Eagles’ defense made seven errors, but Hartville held on for the victory.
Cole Sinning had three hits, five RBIs and two runs scored; Gus Sinning had three RBIs and one run scored; Jacob Meglan added three hits and scored twice; Truett Coryell had one RBI and scored twice; Hunter Walker had one RBI and one run scored; while Heston Lowery scored twice.
Coryell tossed four innings and gave up no earned runs on five hits with six strikeouts and two walks. Cole Sinning tossed three innings and gave up one earned run on three hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
On Friday, Gus Sinning tossed a perfect game as he gave up no runs or hits with 16 strikeouts in a 1-0 win over Bakersfield.
Cole Sinning had the team’s lone RBI that scored Walker in the bottom of the third inning.
Earlier in the week, the Eagles dropped a tough Summit Conference game to Gainesville, 8-1. Lowery scored the lone run in the loss as the offense had just two hits.
Coryell tossed five innings and gave up six earned runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and three walks. Lowery tossed two shutout innings and gave up three hits. Their record is 12-3.
