Mansfield Lady Lions win Consolation title in own tourney
The Mansfield Lady Lions’ basketball team after defeating Conway to win the Consolation championship in their own Lady Lion Invitational Basketball Tournament.
For the second time this season, the Mansfield Lady Lions ended a tournament with a pair of wins this past weekend. This time, they beat two teams by an average of 19 points to win the Consolation title in their own 35th Lady Lions Invitational Basketball Tournament.
In the battle for some hardware with Summit Conference foe Conway, the Lady Lions’ defense held the Lady Bears to just 10 points in the second and third quarters to help them to a 44-29 victory.
Early in the contest, Mansfield made just one of their first five shots and trailed, 12-9.
A first quarter with a combined 16 turnovers ended with CheyAnn Price’s 3-pointer near the buzzer, cutting the Lady Bears’ lead to one point.
Those points would end up being part of an 11-0 run as Mansfield would take a near double-digit lead. If Mansfield had not missed five free throws, their lead could have been more than four points at halftime.
Kingery’s early third quarter assist to Chloe Holyoak and a Patience Parsons’ 3-pointer pushed the lead up to nine points.
Mansfield would take a 32-18 lead into the final frame as Price’s 3-pointer opened up a 17-point edge.
There were a total of 48 combined turnovers in the contest, but the Lady Lions were able to come out on top.
Addie Jones was an All-Tournament selection after her stat line of seven points, 15 rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Kingery tallied 10 points, eight rebounds, five assists and two steals; Price had eight points; Holyoak added eight points, eight rebounds and two steals; Chloe Napier had seven points, four rebounds, one assist and one steal; and Parsons added three points.
In the Consolation semifinals, the Lady Lions’ defense held Niangua to eight points or less in all four quarters for a 54-21 victory.
After leading 21-10 at halftime, Kingery paced Mansfield with 12 of her team’s 24 points in the third quarter to help the Lady Lions end the game on a 33-11 run.
Kingery finished with 21 points; Jones had 18; both Napier and Price added six; and Holyoak had three.’
In the opener with Fordland, the Lady Lions scored eight points or less in all four quarters of a tough 47-17 loss.
Jones led her team with 12 points; Kingery had three; and Napier scored two points.
