Mansfield Lions beat two teams of Bears
After ending their five game losing streak a week earlier, the Mansfield Lions’ basketball team has now won three in a row after picking up a pair of big victories over Bears teams from Conway and Willow Springs.
The Lions are now at .500 in the Summit Conference as they hosted Conway and crushed the Bears, 80-34.
The Lions’ defense held the Bears to 10 points or less in all four quarters.
In a 21-7 opening quarter, Jace Headrick scored 10 points.
Mansfield then had back-to-back 25-point quarters as they made seven, 3-pointers.
Malachi Ussery scored 12 points and Kaden Young added 10 during the stretch.
Owen Rhodes scored four points late to help seal the 46-point win.
All 10 players listed on the roster for the game scored points in the win.
Young had 15; Ussery and Headrick had 14; Rhodes scored nine; Fisher Croney had eight; Kellen Campbell scored seven; Haven Proetz six; Easton Thompson had three points; while Cole Whorton and Brayden Stuart scored two points.
Their week ended with a 63-62 win at Willow Springs as Headrick stole an inbound pass near mid-court to end a final Bears’ possession.
He first put his team up one on a layup with 21 seconds left in the contest.
The Bears would then make a pair of free throws with 9.6 seconds remaining to retake the lead.
With 2.5 seconds left on the clock, Young was fouled during a 3-point shot. After missing the first free throw, he made the final two for a Lions’ lead and eventual win.
In the first half, Headrick scored 10 of his team’s 26 points to pace Mansfield to a 10-point halftime lead.
Willow Springs responded in the third quarter with a 23-point frame to trim the lead to four.
In the final quarter, Headrick had seven points and Croney added six to help Mansfield hold on for the win after scoring 26 points in the final eight minutes. Headrick scored 20 points; Croney added 14; Young had 13; Campbell scored 12; and both Proetz and Ussery had two points.
