Mansfield Lions knock off Seymour and Gainesville
The Mansfield Lions moved their record to 18-6 overall after picking up a pair of big home Summit Conference wins last week.
It was a back-and-forth battle against a solid Class 3 Seymour Tigers’ squad. Fortunately, the Lions held on late for a 55-51 victory.
Jace Headrick scored six points in the first quarter and Kellen Campbell had five as Mansfield trailed by one early.
The Lions responded in the second quarter with a 13-6 run as Campbell scored six points.
Up six at halftime, Mansfield saw their lead slip to just one point in the third after being outscored 12-7.
In the fourth quarter, the Lions made 10-of-17 free throws to help Mansfield hold on late for the victory.
Campbell had 19 points; Headrick had 14; both Fisher Croney and Malachi Ussery scored six; Cole Whorton had five points; and both Kaden Young and Haven Proetz had four points.
This past Friday night, the Lions hosted a Gainesville squad that recently knocked off Norwood.
The Lions opened the game on an 18-5 run in front of their home crowd and held the lead throughout in a 69-57 victory. In that big first quarter, Croney scored eight points.
Five different Mansfield players in the second quarter, helping them maintain a 12-point edge at halftime.
Gainesville trailed by 10 entering the fourth when both Campbell and Croney scored seven points to help Mansfield to win by a dozen points.
Headrick scored his 1,000th career point in the win after scoring 18.
Croney led Mansfield with a team-high 19 points; Campbell had 13; Proetz 10; Young five; and both Owen Rhodes and Ussery scored two points.
Mansfield is the No. 3 seed in the Class 2, District 10 Tournament on their home court.
They host Summersville at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 24. A win gives them a match-up with either Norwood or Dora at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 26. The finals are at 3 p.m. on Feb. 28.
