Lady Pirates’ softball set for districts

The Norwood Lady Pirates’ softball team entered the Class 1, District 1 Tournament in Halfway on a five game winning streak.
Add in a first round victory over Van Buren, 7-0, and the Lady Pirates set themselves up for a special postseason run just after press time. They took on Walnut Grove after press time on Monday, Oct. 21. A win gave them a finals match-up at 5 p.m. (No statistical information available at press time.)
If they win a district title, the Lady Pirates will take on the Class 1, District 2 winner on Oct. 26.
Norwood’s two most recent wins came on Friday, Oct. 11 as they outscored two teams by a 33-6 margin.
Norwood had 13 hits in a 15-4 win over East Carter.
Katelynn Bennett had three hits, two RBIs and three runs scored; Jaycee Hall added three RBIs and one run scored; Maddie Campbell added three hits, two RBIs and two runs scored; Kinley Sinning had two RBIs and two runs scored; Jayden Chambers added one RBI and scored twice; Autumn Gunter and Natalee Lawson had one RBI and one run scored; Gentry Davault had one RBI; and Gracelynn Miller scored twice.
On the mound, Campbell tossed five innings and gave up one earned run on three hits with 10 strikeouts and one walk.
Norwood scored 13 runs in the top of the second inning to then beat Dadeville, 18-2.
Both Bennett and Sinning had big days for the Lady Pirates. Bennett had five RBIs and scored twice while Sinning added five RBIs and scored one run.
Campbell had three RBIs and four runs scored; Chambers added one RBI and scored four times; Lawson had one RBI and scored twice; Miller had one RBI and scored one run; while Mayci Calhoun, Lydia Harden, Hall and Gunter scored one run.
Campbell tossed three innings and gave up two earned runs on one hit with five strikeouts and two walks.
