Lady Pirates win Pink & White Consolation title

The Norwood Lady Pirates’ basketball team with the Consolation title after their win over Willard in the Pink Division of the Pink & White Tournament played on the campus of Drury University.
With an enrollment of just 92 students, the Norwood Lady Pirates’ basketball team competed in the recent Pink & White Tournament featuring several much larger schools, making it very difficult for the small school to leave Springfield with some hardware.
In spite of the impossible task, the Lady Pirates beat Aurora (457 enrollment) and Ozark (1,348 enrollment) before defeating Willard (1,036 enrollment) in the Consolation finals to bring home the Pink Division Consolation trophy.
Against Willard, the Lady Pirates led by two early with the help of Kalie Chadwell’s seven points.
Norwood then went on a 19-11 run before halftime as Chadwell hit a pair of 3-pointers and scored 10 more points.
Norwood led 32-27 at halftime before the Lady Tigers’ defense held them to just nine points in the third to tie the game at 41.
Jayden Chambers hit a 3-pointer and Chadwell scored six points in the final frame to lift Norwood to the win.
Chadwell led the Lady Pirates with 27 points; Addie Gray made three, 3-pointers and scored 16; Chambers added nine; and Jaycee Hall had one point.
One game earlier, the Lady Pirates defeated Ozark for the second year in a row. This time, a big first half helped them pull out a 41-38 victory.
Gentry Davault scored six points in the first quarter to help her team jump out to a 14-6 lead.
Chadwell added four points and Gray hit a 3-pointer to keep the lead to six at halftime.
Ozark outscored Norwood, 23-20, in the final two quarters, but the Lady Pirates held on for the win.
Chadwell had 17 points; Davault scored 10; Hall and Gray each had five points; while Chambers had four points.
In the opening round, the No. 7 seeded Lady Pirates outscored Aurora, 36-17, in the second half to pull away for a 59-35 victory.
Chadwell made three, 3-pointers and finished with a team-high 27 points. Hall had 11; Gray scored nine; and both Chambers and Davault had six points.
In the second round, they took on Marshfield, the No. 1 team in Class 5, and gave the Lady Bluejays all they could handle.
Norwood trailed by just two points entering the fourth quarter. They would close the gap to one point with 3:47 left in the game before Marshfield pulled away late for the 62-57win.
Norwood opened the contest on a 9-2 run before Marshfield scored five unanswered points.
The Lady Bluejays went on a 13-2 run to take a 29-22 lead into halftime. The Lady Pirates made just 1-of-10 shots from the field in the second quarter.
Norwood started the third quarter on a 7-2 run with the help of Davault. She would add a 3-point play and a late basket to tie the game a 40.
Down two, Chambers did hit a late 3-poitner in the fourth quarter to close the gap to one before Norwood fell in the final minutes.
Davault scored 17 of her 21 points in the second half. Chadwell scored 17 points; Chambers added 11; Gray had eight; and Hall scored two points.
