Norwood drops pair of Summit games

The Norwood Pirates’ baseball team did open Summit Conference play last week with an important win at Fordland. They unfortunately ended their week with a pair of costly Summit losses that may put their hopes of a regular season title in jeopardy.
In the win over the Eagles, Norwood scored three runs in toe top of the seventh inning for an 8-3 lead.
Fordland’s two-RBI triple cut the lead to 8-5 in the bottom of the seventh inning before a ground out ended the game two batters later.
Laken Coatney closed the game out with two and a third innings pitched as he gave up three earned runs on two hits with one strikeout and four walks.
Cooper Vaughan picked up the win after tossing four and two-thirds innings and allowing two earned runs on four hits with three strikeouts.
Another Norwood win came on Thursday as they shutout Climax Springs, 15-0.
A nine-run bottom of the fourth innings was too much for the Cougars to overcome.
Cooper Vaughan had two RBIs and scored three times; Pierce Lawson had two RBIs and two runs scored; Gary Williams added two RBIs and one run scored; Carson Vaughan had one RBI and scored three times; Carder Kelly had one RBI and scored twice; while Pete McCune and Coatney had one RBI and one run scored.
Caden Black tossed four innings of no-hit, shutout ball and had three strikeouts and two walks.
On that same day, the Pirates hosted Gainesville, but fell, 8-4.
The Bulldogs scored here runs in their final at-bat to pull away for good.
Williams had two RBIs; both McCune and Coatney had one RBI; while Noah Drake scored two times.
Williams tossed three innings and gave up three earned runs on three hits with one strikeout and three walks.
Coatney tossed four innings and gave up three earned runs on four hits with four strikeouts and five walks.
