Norwood Pirates’ baseball hovering under a .500 record

The Norwood Pirates’ baseball team have been unable to keep their record above .500 recently after dropping three of their last five contests.
Though they had a few tough losses, they did manage to beat Sparta for a Summit Conference win on Sep. 24, 7-1.
Norwood’s offense scored four runs in the final at-bat, sparked by a solo home run from Laken Coatney.
Noah Drake led the Pirates with two RBIs and one run scored; Pete McCune added two RBIs; Holten Lopez, Gary Williams and Coatney each had one RBI and scored one run; while Carson Vaughan and Pierce Lawson each scored one run.
Coatney was dominant on the mound as he tossed seven innings and gave up one earned run on two hits with 10 strikeouts and four walks.
Their other big win came against Dora in a district championship rematch as they scored 14 runs in the bottom of the second inning for a 17-2 win.
Drake hit an inside-the-park three-run home run and finished with five RBIs and two runs scored; Williams tallied three hits, two RBIs and three runs scored; Coatney had two RBIs and scored twice; Cooper Vaughan and Carson Vaughan each had two RBIs and one run scored; Lawson and Lopez had one RBI and scored twice; Carder Kelly had one RBI; and McCune scored two times.
Lawson tossed four innings and gave up two earned runs on four hits with two strikeouts and one walk.
Back on Sep. 16, the Pirates dropped a tough 18-4 decision to Gainesville.
Lopez and Carson Vaughan each had one RBI and one run scored; both Coatney and Lawson had one RBI; while Brady Vaughan and Cooper Vaughan each scored one time.
Cooper Vaughan tossed two and two-thirds innings and gave up five earned runs on four hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Lopez tossed one and a third innings and gave up six earned runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and two walks. McCune tossed one inning and gave up three earned runs on four hits with two walks.
Against Conway, the Bears scored six runs in their final three at-bats to rally for a 7-5 win over the Pirates.
Lopez did hit a solo home run to finish with one RBI and one run scored; Williams also had one RBI and one run scored; Cooper Vaughan added one RBI; while Drake, Lawson and Coatney each scored one run.
On the mound, Cooper Vaughan gave up six earned runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts and three walks. Lopez tossed one and two-thirds innings, giving up one earned run on two hits with three strikeouts.
