Norwood Pirates drop two in Hartville event
The Norwood Pirates’ baseball team entered last week’s Hartville Tournament undefeated and state-ranked.
They unfortunately ran into a pair of solid teams in the event and lost two of three contests, moving their record to 6-2.
In their 14-3 win over Billings, Norwood scored 13 of their runs during the fifth and sixth innings.
Pierce Lawson had a big day with two hits, three RBIs and three runs scored; Laken Coatney, Holten Lopez and Drae Bradshaw each had two RBIs and one run scored; Payton McCune added two RBIs and two runs scored; Caden Black added one RBI and scored twice; Carder Kelly had one RBI; and both Wyatt Bolfing and Carson Vaughan scored twice.
Lopez tossed seven innings and gave up three earned runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and one walk.
Before that win, the Pirates fell to a now nine-win team in Alton, 10-3.
Offensively, Lawson had one RBI; Black scored twice; and Coatney scored one run.
Coatney tossed three and a third innings and gave up two earned runs on five hits with five strikeouts and four walks. Carson Vaughan tossed two-thirds of a scoreless inning and had one strikeout with two walks. Lawson walked four batters in two-thirds of an inning and gave up three earned runs on no hits. Lopez tossed one and a third innings and gave up one earned run on four hits with two strikeouts.
The offense had just four hits in a 6-0 loss to Van Buren to open the tournament.
Black tossed six innings and gave up six earned runs on 11 hits with one strikeout and two walks. Carson Vaughan tossed a scoreless inning and had one strikeout.
Norwood is now 6-2 on the spring season.
