Pirates’ baseball falls in first round

The Norwood Pirates’ baseball team, who have won district championships in three of the past four seasons, their move up to Class 2 didn’t go well this spring.
Last week in the first round of the Class 2, District 10 Tournament played in Gainesville, the No. 3 Pirates fell in the first round to No. 6 Alton, 2-1.
Alton led 2-0 before the Pirates closed the gap to 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning, but they were unable to get any closer.

On the mound , Cooper Vaughan tossed six and two-thirds innings and gave up two earned runs on six hits with seven strikeouts and five walks. Laken Coatney tossed a third of an inning and had one strikeout.
Norwood did open their week by knocking off the top seed in districts in a regular season contest.
Against Bakersfield, Black was dominant on the mound as he tossed seven shutout innings and gave up two hits with five strikeouts and one walk. Coatney had two RBIs and one run scored; Wyatt Bolfing added one RBI; while both McCune and Black scored one run.
One day later, the Pirates held on for a 2-1 road victory against Ava.
Norwood scored one run in both the third and fourth innings before holding on to pick up the win over the Bears.
Both Cooper Vaughan and McCune had one RBI while both Carder Kelly and Black scored one run.
Kelly tossed six and a third shutout innings and gave up two hits with three strikeouts and five walks. Coatney tossed two-thirds of an inning and have two strikeouts.
Norwood finished their season with a 15-7 overall record.
