Wayne N. Sutherland

Wayne N. Sutherland was born on June 7, 1930, at his family home near Champion. He was the first son of Ed and Minnie (Schuette) Sutherland. On May 10, 2026, he departed this life in Hartville. He attended the Champion school and graduated from the eighth grade. Finding few jobs available in the area, he spent the summers working the Kansas wheat harvests. In March 1950, Wayne and Frances Cooley were married in Mountain Home, Ark. with their mothers attending. David Wayne was born to this union in July 1951, but he died while still an infant. Shirley E. “Laine” and Greta were born to them in later years. After their first baby passed away in 1951, they were urged by Frances’ brother and sister-in-law, Lee and Maggie, to move to Los Angeles, Calif. for a change of scenery. However, homesickness drew them back home soon afterwards. Yet again, they tried Los Angeles in 1952, but it was to no avail. The pull on their hearts from their home state of Missouri tugged at them to return after a few short months. Wayne continued to reside in his beloved midwest state the rest of his life. Wayne was involved in various business ventures throughout his life. In 1959 to 1960, Wayne and Tommy started the Sutherland Auto Salvage and ran it until highway 60 was divided. At that time, they were bought out. In addition, he raced track stock cars, often going home with the winners’ trophy. Then Wayne began a bulldozer business. After he sold that, he ran a dairy farm with his brother-in-law, Bud Wade. Following their sale of the dairy farm, he concentrated on the lime/fertilizer trucking business. This portion of his life came to an end as a result of a stroke in 2008. He and Frances had an active social life. They were members of the Ozark’s Older Iron Club in Cabool. Their community engagement also consisted of regularly attending Monday nights at McClurg Old Time Music. Baptized as a young man at Fox Creek into the Church of Christ, he continued to be involved in the church as he continued through life. He and his wife demonstrated their devotion to church work by helping in various ways over the years. They always put God first above all else.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Minnie Sutherland; one son, David Wayne; one daughter, Shirley E. “Laine” Sutherland; one sister, Esca Triplett; one brother, Tommy Sutherland; one brother-in-law, Don Krewson; and all the Cooley in-laws and their spouses. He is survived by his wife, Frances; daughter, Greta and her husband, Bob Cope; two sisters, Anita Krewson, Mary Fusilier and her husband, Willis; one brother-in-law, Vernon Triplett; one sister-in-law, Barb Sutherland; one step-grandson, Aaron Cope and his wife, Nicole; and several nieces and nephews who will miss him greatly.  A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 15, 2026, in the Craig-Hurtt Funeral Home of Mountain Grove with Todd Richardson officiating. David Coffman, Kevin Coble, Rick Davis, Bob Cope, Rick Allen and Bryan Williams served as pallbearers. Burial was in the Denlow Cemetery under the direction of the Craig-Hurtt Funeral Home.
