Mountain Grove crushes way to win over Hartville

Mountain Grove’s baseball team returned to their winning ways last week, picking up a pair of victories. They nearly had three wins, but they lost their fourth game of the season in the seventh inning. The Panthers are now 4-4 on the season.

On Monday, they traveled to Hartville and used a five-run third inning to help them win, 10-1. Hartville’s defense struggled, making five errors in their loss.

Brayden Haughey crushed a solo home run in the top of the fourth inning to help the Panthers pull away for good. He finished the game with one RBI and three runs scored. Drew Vaughan had a big day with three hits, three RBIs and one run scored; Carson Allen added two RBIs and one run scored; Kaden Richardson scored twice; Preston Williams, Brylon Mayberry and Dom Palagi had one RBI and one run scored; and Hoyt Mathews had one RBI.

Mayberry had a solid game on the mound tossing seven innings and allowing one earned run on three hits with 12 strikeouts and two walks.

As for Hartville, Ethan McDaris had the lone RBI while Grant Culver scored the Eagles’ only run.

Austin Lanham tossed four innings and allowed six earned runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and six walks. Mason Cogdill had three innings of work and allowed no earned runs on one hit with two strikeouts.

Two days later, two pitchers combined for a one-hit shutout of Dora, 14-0.

Allen tossed four innings of shutout ball, allowing one hit while striking out six. Palagi tossed a scoreless inning and had two strikeouts and two walks.

Vaughan had a big game with four RBIs and two runs scored; Williams also came up big with three RBIs and three runs scored; Gatlin Keeling had two RBIs and one run scored; Mayberry, Haughey and Palagi each had one RBI and one run scored; Richardson had one RBI and scored twice; Allen scored three times; and Mathews had one RBI.

Mountain Grove had a 5-3 lead on Gainesville before the Bulldogs scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning, handing the Panthers a 7-5 defeat.

Gainesville hit two home runs and two doubles in their final at-bat to pull away for the win.

Keeling had two RBIs and one run scored in the loss. Mayberry and Haughey each had one RBI; while Destin Unger, Palagi, Williams and Vaughan each scored one run. Mathews tossed five innings on the mound, allowing two earned runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and three walks. Allen lasted two innings and allowed four earned runs on five hits. He also allowed the two home runs.
