Pirates win district championship

Norwood wins first title since 2011-2012 season

It was a festive atmosphere for the Norwood Pirates boys basketball team last Friday night on their home court in the finals of the Class 2, District 10 tournament. When the final buzzer sounded, the Pirates players and fan base celebrated the program’s first district title since the 2011-12 season with a 53-44 victory over Gainesville. It was also just the sixth district title for the boys in school history.

When stand-out junior Garrett Davault was on the free throw line with 4.7 seconds left in the game, he had a big smile on his face and couldn’t contain his excitement as he knew his team was about to win the district title.

“Last year, we just came up short by one game,” Davault said in reference to his team falling in last year’s district finals to eventual state champion Dora. “We had to get back and win it this year…We are a team now of mostly upperclassmen. We knew it was our time.”
