Tyrrell wins co-district championship, Miller also advances to state

Mountain Grove golfers Peyton Tyrrell and Gabby Miller with head coach Matt Anderson.

The Mountain Grove Lady Panthers’ golf team left the Deer Lake Golf Course in Springfield last week with a share of an individual Class 2, District 3 championship and have two golfers advance to the state championships.
Junior Peyton Tyrrell shot an 86, tying Kameryn Wood, of Liberty (Mountain View), to win a share of the district championship.
The possibility of winning the title seemed in jeopardy when Tyrrell’s putter broke with around five holes remaining.
Mountain Grove head coach Matt Anderson said the rules include her not being able to use a teammate’s putter or a competitor’s putter. Fortunately, a spare putter was found and she was able to finish her district championship winning round.
Senior Gabby Miller had her own adversity, playing with a banged up leg that led to her limping for the final six holes.
She shot a 100 for 11th place.
The two golfers will now compete in the Class 2 State Championships held on Monday-Tuesday, Oct. 19-20 at the Bogey Creek Golf Club in Farmington.
“Both of them battled through different kinds of adversity and showed the mental toughness that we’ve been working on this year,’ Coach Anderson said. “These girls have been consistent competitors all season. They have put in a lot of time over the last couple of years and it has really paid off!
Other golfers playing for the Lady Panthers in districts were led by Mylie Matlock, who was 24th with a 116. Also playing were Sophie Cameron (127) and Brystol Shannon (129).
As a team, the Lady Panthers were fourth in districts with a 429.
